How do You Address Gun Violence in the Classroom?

Even though I teach high school students, I have to plan carefully how I introduce sensitive topics.  As a special education teacher, I have a few seniors this year who have extreme anxiety and they often ask me very specific questions about the nuclear capability of North Korea.  Due to the recent events in Florida, combined with too many other mass shootings in the school setting, I feel I’m obligated to provide a forum for students to discuss their thoughts, fears, and questions. Tomorrow, we will examine the amazing speech by senior Emma Gonzalez for rhetorical appeals.  In this manner, there is an academic activity to ground the discussion and students will find a space to ask questions.  If you’d like a copy of my assignment, click here and please feel free to make any changes you would like to fit the needs of your students.
